  • Petroscout datasets are updated monthly as data becomes available but as a rule expect datasets to be updated within a day or two after Petrinex releases the latest public production data, usually around the 20th of each month.

  • Petroscout harnesses the power of the extraordinary datasets available for the petroleum industry in Canada

Each well, pipeline, facility, and disposition are estimated based on their unique aspects including defined zones requiring zonal abandonment or repair, primary cementing requirements, vent flow repair, thermal cement requirements, access conditions, pipeline connectivity, lease size and soil type, clay pad assumptions, road assumptions, reported spill inclusion, SAGD facility considerations, type of equipment needed to complete work, etc.

Basically, the estimates are the same as an end of life professional sitting down and doing a manual estimate and Petroscout provides mini-abandonment programs, lease descriptions, assumption descriptions, etc. to help a user quickly vet whether an estimate is reasonable and trustworthy (spoiler alert: they are!).

Each user can change unit rates (rig rates, wireline, reclamation, etc.) and assumptions and generate estimates with the push of a button based on their rates. Please view the video on the homepage to see examples of these reports.

No other company provides anywhere close to the accuracy of our reports, scouts honor.

  • Our liability estimates provide a high degree of accuracy (AFE ready) using only government data and typically reduces client Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) estimates by optimizing estimates by combining surface leases, pipeline segments, and facilities where it makes sense.  These estimates along with our end of life optimization reports also provide corporate stability by strengthening acquisition and divestiture opportunities and assist clients with long-term planning, supporting documentation for insurance applications, and environmental disclosure for financing purposes.

End of life work is expensive, and industry needs to be better at optimizing this work.  We provide industry leading end of life data analytics to assist licensees and their service providers to quickly and accurately determine well abandonment candidates, cut and cap candidates, pipeline abandonment candidates, and to pinpoint reclamation candidates that have high annual carrying costs.  By identifying these opportunities, clients will be able to efficiently reduce annual carrying costs, effectively reduce regulator deemed liabilities, and improve asset divestiture potential.  If all of industry takes this approach, the state of environmental cleanup in Alberta will improve dramatically providing a win-win for industry and taxpayers while reducing the current negative overtones regarding Alberta’s large inactive well populations.

  • Petroscout’s liability and risk assessment reports are the prefect tool to understand the liability risk associated with a potential acquisition.

Petroscout will quickly help you decide whether or not to move to the data room saving you time and money on opportunities that are easily determined to not be fits.  Solstice engineering has been providing end of life liability estimates and compliance exposure summaries since 2008 and we are excited that users can now finally have access to these evaluations almost as simple as by pushing a button.

Users simply copy in well, pipeline and facility inventories (or Petroscout can generate using the list query tool), adjust unit rates and assumptions and build the ARO report by literally pressing a button (feature available in free trial but will not generate full results).  Prepare to be amazed!

  • This is another true strength of Petroscout.

Petroscout does an excellent job of estimating deemed liabilities for wells and facilities (and we still estimate the deemed asset if you still like that piece of information) but also allows users to upload the latest report generated by the regulator to incorporate into ARO reports (for comparison), A&D evaluations (cherry pick assets based on LLR impact), or to have Petroscout find opportunities to reduce deemed liabilities.  Petroscout will also use this information to optimize end of life project management (biggest bang for the buck in reducing deemed liabilities) and to help make divestiture decisions.

  • Yes, Petroscout builds wellbore schematics for all well using only government data.  Petroscout has a built-in well file review form that allows users to add data not found in government datasets, estimate primary cement tops, add completion details and even has a check list system that helps a user with limited experience do a proper well file review to plan downhole compliance and well abandonment work.

  • Yes.

Petroscout reviews the completion history of every well and knows how many zones have been completed, if they are open, suspended or abandoned, and whether already abandoned zones appear to be non-compliant.

From this Petroscout determines if a well is compliant downhole or if a well that was previously reported compliant downhole is not. Petroscout also knows whether a well needs further work to abandon it (primary cementing repairs, SCVF repairs, thermal cementing plugs, etc.) and if it appears that no work is required Petroscout will provide a list of wells that appear to be ready for cut and cap (well file reviews are still required to verify government data).

  • Not yet, but it is on our radar for that reason.  It only makes sense to offer a tour report/ daily operations report form to go along with the wellbore schematic tool and we will be excited to look into it soon.

  • Petroscout is designed to help you be proactive rather than reactive and continuously monitors compliance management work including inactive well compliance, SCVF testing, packer isolation testing, well testing (reservoir pressure), pipeline discontinuations and regulatory penalty tracking.

Project management reports list requirements, deadlines, and accurate cost estimates for budgeting while the built-in forms allow field users to enter inspections and tests directly into Petroscout.

Petroscout also assists with regulatory submissions.  Petroscout will even automatically map pictures to wells based on GPS coordinates and these pictures are then presented as part of the geospatial representation in Google Earth when you click on that well.  Wondering if a well still has a pump jack on location, let the picture linkages built into Petroscout make your life easier.

  • Yes, Petroscout has a report (SCVF Repair Assistance Report) designed for wells with reported SCVF’s where it will list all wells with reported SCVFs within 10 km, how they were repaired if applicable, source depth if applicable, vintage and cementing comparisons to help with determining if there is a SCVF source trend for the well.

  • Yes, a very powerful one.

Users can create as many lists as they want (save and re-access as needed) and use them for project management, A&D prospecting, corporate ARO estimates (update monthly if you feel the urge), partner reviews, etc.  Petroscout has a built-in query system to help you quickly generate lists for wells, pipelines and facilities or you can simply copy in lists and have Petroscout analyze the inventory and help you fix it as needed.

And it is smart too, if you enter a well in a weird way with spaces and use M for meridian (for example you enter 7-32-73-8 W6M, Petroscout will still determine that this is 00/07-32-073-08W6/2).  Finally, users can enter cost center data, working interests, operator types, hierarchy details, surface lease rental rates, property taxes so that Petroscout can use this information to build better reports and to provide optimized project plans.

  • The base of Petroscout datasets is similar to what industry is used to for typical data miners but the true power or Petroscout lies in the data manipulation that occurs with these datasets, examples like estimating theoretical cement tops for wellbore casings, determining zone details based on completion histories, estimating risk, determining infrastructure linkages, automated project management reports based on regulations, building mini-abandonment programs for every well to allow for vetting liability estimates, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

We like to say that Petroscout does the heavy lifting for you and gets you from A to B very efficiently.  We think of it as the 95% solution but that our reports and data manipulation still need to be reviewed prior to using this information to make business decisions or execute compliance and end of life work.  We are confident that we are 98% accurate in most of the manipulation we provide, and we strive to fix any errors brought to our attention very quickly, usually within 1 to 2 days.

  • Petroscout has been meticulously designed to properly map industry architecture as this is critical to provide proper liability estimates and useful when using Petroscout to look at wells, pipelines, etc. in detail as it allows users to drill down on the linkages much more quickly.

Wells are connected to pipelines, pipeline segments are connected to each other and then to facilities, dispositions and spills/complaints are related to all three, water wells share leases with wells and facilities, wells and facilities share leases with other wells and facilities, mineral rights are associated with wells, and Petroscout does an excellent job of determining these linkages and listing them in the reports form to help users navigate their assets.  Roads end at leases or provide access to leases and Petroscout uses this information to understand if leases require winter access and also to understand if a northern lease was built using a clay pad.

Petroscout has done the work to determine wells that share surface leases using proximity analysis and disposition boundaries such that Petroscout is the first tool to truly understand lease inventories that have future reclamation liability.

  • Petroscout incorporates waterway geospatial representation, community boundaries, sensitivity boundaries (i.e. caribou), soil suitability analysis, etc. to assess crossings/proximity to receptors.

Petroscout also evaluates age, fluids/substance, drilling history, reported spill history, release potential, etc. to evaluate risk potential for wells, pipelines and facilities and allows user to apply risk scores to help pinpoint assets that require heightened surveillance.  Finally, this is another tool to assist companies with their annual ESG reports or when making A&D decisions.

  • Yes, Petroscout uses its architecture mapping to understand pipelines that need to be discontinued and even does a good job of determining potential dead legs.  Pipeline connectivity, compliance requirements, abandonment plan and risk analysis are provided for every segment via the Pipeline Information Report with a lot of this data also available in the Google Earth mapping.

  • Yes, we use a lot of geospatial datasets to better understand how to estimate liability for facilities and this results in extra data analysis that is provided in the Facility Information Report. The best way to appreciate this is to view the facility information in the Petroscout maps and reports using the free trial version of the software.

  • Yes, the creator of Petroscout has a drilling/completions background and has added pipe specification tools, theoretical cement calculation tools and a report entitled Well Completions Program Summary Sheet designed to be attached to completions and abandonment programs.  This report can be exported to excel and data dropboxes can be used to fill in information during well file reviews.

  • Petroscout has many customizable features designed to make the software work for each user’s specific needs.  Petroscout has been created by a petroleum engineering industry expert with over 30 years’ experience who constantly upgrades and evolves the software based on user feedback and requests.  A simple sentence that starts with “I wish that Petroscout…” usually leads to the request being incorporated if it will add value to multiple users of Petroscout.

  • Petroscout generates reports very quickly (in most case reports take 1-2 seconds to build) and is only limited by a user’s internet data speeds.

  • Yes, Petroscout provides monthly updates to the industry reports that provide inventory summary data, liability analyses, production summaries, compliance summaries, top producing well lists, pool production summaries, drilling histories, abandonment/reclamation summaries, etc. by province, licensee, zone, pool, county, township and within first nation boundaries.

  • Petroscout generates reports that can be printed both softcopy or hardcopy or alternatively, each report can be exported as a separate Excel file.

  • Petroscout currently does not integrate with other systems but if your corporation can add value by incorporating the unique datasets and project management reports found in Petroscout into other software, contact us at support@petroscout.ca to see how we can support your initiative.

  • Petroscout project management, liability estimate (ARO) forms, reports and tools are always kept up to date with current regulatory body directives and regulations, Petroscout has been created using extensive industry knowledge and provides efficiencies and logical tools that are simply now available anywhere else in industry.
